A Storied Past: The History of Shoreby Club

Shoreby Club traces its roots back to the early 20th century when industrialist Samuel Mather built a stunning mansion on Lake Erie, designed as a summer retreat for family enjoyment. In 1990, after years of planning, John Domo’s Newport North Shore Development acquired the historic property, envisioning a revival of its original spirit of leisure and elegance. Under the careful guidance of renowned architects and designers, the mansion underwent a meticulous restoration to preserve its grandeur while honoring Mather's legacy. Since its grand opening in 1993, Shoreby Club has celebrated its rich history, serving as a gathering place where the charm of a bygone era meets the warmth of community.

Recent years have brought thoughtful updates to Shoreby Club, including the enhancement of the Harbor Grille and the addition of a brand-new Pavilion. The Harbor Grille, known for its inviting atmosphere, now offers even more comfort and style with modern upgrades while retaining its cozy, casual charm. The new Pavilion has quickly become a favorite among members, providing a stunning lakeside venue for events and celebrations, blending contemporary elegance with Shoreby's timeless allure.

1890

Construction of the Mansion

The Shoreby Mansion, a 20,000 square-foot Romanesque and Gothic-style summer residence, was built in 1890 for Samuel Mather, founder of Pickands, Mather & Co., and his wife, philanthropist Flora Amelia Stone Mather. Designed by renowned architect Charles Schweinfurth, the mansion featured intricate stonework, wood beam timbering, Romanesque arches, and a panoramic view of Lake Erie.

1930s

After the Mathers

Following the departure of the Mather family, the mansion changed ownership several times between 1939 and 1990. The mansion was used as a boarding house and, at one point, became entangled in illicit gambling activities during prohibition.

1990s

Becoming Shoreby

In 1990, the historic Shoreby Mansion was acquired by Domo Corporation and transformed into the private Shoreby Club as part of the Newport Harbor Development. ClubCorp oversaw the conversion, maintaining the original architectural features while adding dining rooms, lounges, guest suites, and a marina. The Shoreby Club officially opened on May 8th 1993, becoming a premier lakefront destination.
